A ceramic is coated onto the surface and vaporises when the surface heats, cooling the surface.

• Proven to be effective for re-entry Mach 20+.
• Must replace the tiles/coatings for every journey. Expensive.

Transpiration Cooling

• Re-usable. Economically viable.
• Complex coolant porous system.
• More research needed on optimisation.
